Don’t get burned this summer: your protection against bad hires.

50 percent off all your recruitment costs until 2027

There’s a reason every bottle of sun cream tells you to apply before you’re in the sun, not after. By the time you feel the burn, the damage is already done.

Hospitality hiring is no different. This summer, the sector is seeing swelling customer numbers – but at the same time, the cost of getting a hire wrong is at its highest in living memory. That collision is why we’ve launched Candid’s Summer of Love, as our way of repaying some of the love this amazing sector has shown us since we launched last year.

🧴 The current squeeze

Here’s the problem: margins are thinner than they’ve been in years, at exactly the moment demand has spiked. There has never been a worse time to bring the wrong person into your team, but it’s crucial to move at speed.

Operators are currently trading through the most expensive set of cost pressures UK hospitality has faced in decades.

  • Employer National Insurance rose from 13.8% to 15% in April 2025, with the threshold at which employers start paying cut from £9,100 to £5,000. UKHospitality estimates that’s added up to £1 billion in extra cost across the sector.
  • The National Living Wage rises again in April 2026 to £12.71, with the 18 to 20 rate jumping 8.5% to £10.85. Combined, this year’s wage increases represent £1.4 billion in additional cost to hospitality businesses.
  • Business rates relief for hospitality was cut from 75% to 40%, adding an estimated £215 million to the sector’s tax bill. Average pub rates are up 140% as a result, and rateable value increases mean the average pub will pay £12,900 more in rates over the next three years, with pubs facing a 76% rise and hotels 115%.
  • The Employment Rights Act, phasing in from April 2026, brings day-one rights to claim unfair dismissal and day-one sick pay, along with tighter probation rules. A bad hire has always been expensive. It’s now also harder and slower to undo.

The knock-on effect is already visible. UKHospitality counts 170,000 sector jobs lost since the October 2024 Budget, and is warning that a further 100,000 could go as these changes land in full. Nearly 600 venues closed on a net basis in the past year, a third of businesses are cutting operating hours, one in eight is closing locations, and 60% are downsizing their workforce just to stay afloat.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Venues are full, but that doesn’t guarantee profits.

We’re in a World Cup summer, and hospitality has felt it. Industry forecasts put an extra £4.2 billion into UK food and drink across the tournament period, a 9.3% uplift on a normal year, with £898 million of that spent directly in pubs, bars and restaurants during matches. Spend per venue on match days has been running over 150% higher than it did during Euro 2024.

With the tournament now down to the final eight and the quarter-finals under way, venues are heading into the biggest week of trading they’ll see all year. Reserved tables have been averaging £133 a visit, with guests staying for three hours at a time. This is exactly the kind of summer operators plan for. It’s also exactly the kind of summer where being short-staffed, or worse, staffed by the wrong person, costs the most.

💰 What a bad hire actually costs you

It’s easy to think of a bad hire as one unlucky outcome. The numbers say otherwise.

  • A bad hire typically costs between 1.5 and 3 times their salary once you account for wasted salary, training and lost productivity, and can run as high as 30 to 400% of salary when you include the cost of replacing them.
  • A single bad hire at manager level on a £42,000 salary can cost a business £132,000 in wasted pay, training and lost departmental output.
  • 95% of UK businesses admit to making at least one bad hiring decision every year.
  • Getting a new employee to full productivity in year one typically costs 30 to 50% above their salary, before you even factor in what happens if they don’t work out.

And hospitality carries more of this risk than almost any other sector. CIPD puts hospitality attrition at around 52%, against a UK average of 34%, making it one of the lowest-retention industries in the country.

Then there’s the bit nobody likes to talk about. 76% of recruiters say they’ve been ghosted by candidates. In the UK, 55% of job applications go unanswered, 56% of employers admit to ghosting applicants themselves, and 22% of candidates back out before their first day even after accepting the offer. Meanwhile, 80% of hotels report ongoing staffing shortages, with 22% describing themselves as severely understaffed. Everyone’s frustrated with everyone, and the roles still aren’t filled.

None of this is a people problem. It’s a process problem. Recruiters drowning in CVs, six-page application forms and endless back-and-forth were never built for an industry that hires on personality, reliability and fit as much as skill.

🧡 Why we built Candid differently

We built Candid because we want to help the right people find the right seat as often as possible. Matching brilliant talent, with top-class operators, across this amazing sector. No names, no CVs, no bias. Just a match based on the three things that actually predict whether someone will stay: culture, competencies and compensation.

It’s working. Across the businesses hiring on Candid today:

  • The average cost per hire through Candid sits around £180.
  • Roles average 4.8 quality matches each, rather than the 100+ applications typically needed to fill a single hospitality vacancy.
  • >40% of our 25,000+ active candidates are ‘passive’. People not actively job-hunting but open to the right opportunity,
  • 88% of employers on Candid say it’s given them access to passive candidates they’d never have reached through a job board. 69% say the process is more streamlined and efficient, with reduced bias and increased diversity in who they hire across the board.
  • Hospitality is one of the most inclusive sectors in the UK, but still subconscious bias has a huge impact. Women are 30% less likely to be invited to interview from an identical CV, non-English-sounding names see 48% fewer interview invitations, and candidates over 50 are 25 times less likely to be invited to interview than younger counterparts. Take away the CVs, and you take away the bias.

Candid reduces time to hire, whilst increasing candidate retention rates. Giving you access to a pool of hidden talent otherwise unavailable. Fewer applications per role, guaranteed culture fits only, and not a single finder’s fee in sight.
